A Slice of My Life

I went to get groceries today, and by the time I was done with the produce section, the cart was over half full. Just seeing all the different colors in the basket made me feel healthy - reds and yellows of the peaches and strawberries, the purples of the eggplant and turnips, the white of the onions, the green of the lettuces and greens, the tan of the potatoes, and the orange of the tomatoes. Mmmmmm!

Words, words, words. Today is the last day, I promise. I'm gonna just go until I'm done, whether it turns out short or long.

First, let's look at the word "hope", as in "I hope to lose weight" or "I hope I can do it". Hope in and of itself is not a bad word, so don't think I'm down on it. It's just wimpy. Know why? Because it's passive. It's a sit-back-and-enjoy-the-ride word. It's not a confident word, it's just inactive.

My personal choice is to use the word "expect", rather than "hope". Expect is an active word, because it inherently implies that something will happen (as opposed to hope, where you just wish something would happen). Literally, the root of "expect" is from the Latin and means "to look forward, from". Whereas "hope" makes me think of sitting back, "expect" makes me think of leaning forward with anticipation, because I know something's about to happen. It's a confident word, not apprehensive at all.

Finally, the last two words I'd like to cover together. They are "good" and "bad", used in the context of "I've been good" or "I've been bad". Bear in mind that I'm talking specifically here about the use of these words in regards to eating right and exercising only. The issue I see with these words is that they basically try to label you (or your behavior) by your habits. I can't say it strongly enough: You are not defined by what you eat or how often you exercise. The definition of any person comes from within that person, not from something external.

Particularly, "bad" is disenheartening, because it implies regret for past behavior. If you've read my thoughts from the beginning of this site till now, you know I'm not one to hold on to past behaviors. Using this word, "bad", over and over, keeps you focused on what you've done, not what you will do. Whatever you've done in your past does not dictate what you'll do in the future, unless you allow it to. Just because I didn't succeed when I tried to eat healthy in previous years has no bearing on whether or not I will succeed this time.

Am I making sense?

I have an aunt who constantly lays claim to infirmities. "My diabetes", she says, or "my asthma", or "my allergies." Don't get me wrong, I believe these things do exist, but I believe that she makes them more powerful merely by claiming them as hers. I view the word "bad" the same way - if you tell yourself something long enough, what happens? You start to believe it.

You're saying, "how can you use THAT example? You yourself have diabetes! Are you now denying it?"

Well, yes, to some extent. I don't lay claim to diabetes. I don't say "I'm a diabetic", I say "My doctor told me I have diabetes", or "My doctor diagnosed diabetes." I am not defined by this disease, and I fully expect to be cured of it before I reach my health goal next year.

You just watch and see.
